Let’s Talk History

Okay, we’re big basketball fans, so let’s dive into a bit of history. Before we go back over how to get your basketball jersey framed and how much it costs.

So where was basketball invented you ask? In the winter of 1891-1892, a gymnasium at Springfield College (formerly known as the International YMCA Training School) in Springfield, Mass., housed a bunch of restless college students. These young men were obligated to be there, engaging in indoor activities to release the pent-up energy accumulated since their football season had come to an end. The gymnasium class provided them with options like marching, calisthenics, and apparatus work, but these activities paled in comparison to the thrilling games of football and lacrosse they enjoyed during the warmer seasons.

James Naismith, a 31-year-old graduate student, served as the instructor for this class. He created the original 13 rules, which outlined various aspects such as ball movement and fouls. A referee was assigned to oversee the game. The match was divided into two halves, each lasting 15 minutes, with a five-minute break in between. Naismith’s secretary typed up the rules and displayed them on the bulletin board. During the gym class, teams were formed with three centers, three forwards, and three guards on each side. At mid-court, two centers faced off, Naismith threw the ball, and thus the game of “basket ball” came into existence.

Moving on a few years, The Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded in 1946, with its first game held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on November 1, 1946, featuring the Toronto Huskies and New York Knickerbockers. After three seasons, in 1949, the BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) to form the National Basketball Association (NBA). As the 1950s approached, basketball grew in popularity as a major college sport, sparking increased interest in professional basketball. In 1959, the basketball hall of fame was established in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the game was originally played. This esteemed institution recognizes outstanding players, coaches, referees, and individuals who have made significant contributions to the sport’s advancement.
